Austrian Label Hilda.Henri - Interview with Designer Verena Wondrak

Interview with Verena Wondrak, founder and designer of the kidswear label Hilda.Henri from Vienna, Austria.

Verena Wondrak – Sesigner with a Sustainable Claim
After graduating from the premier design university ESMOD in Munich I gathered experience in the fashion business. Following professional positions as a fashion designer for a string of well-known brands, and working as a central buyer and manager in the retail trade, the next step to creating my own collection was almost predestined. With a grant from departure (the Creative Agency of the City of Vienna), I founded Hilda.Henri, a premium milled loden and knitwear collection with an emphasis on sustainability, at the beginning of 2013.

Q: What is the story behind your label’s name Hilda.Henri?

A: I love stories to things. And of course there is a story to Hilda.Henri: My grandmother, to whom I had a close bond, was born in Vienna and her first name was Hilda. The name Henri I just love very much and if I had a son instead of a daughter I would have called him Henri.

Q: Why did you choose milled loden for your collection? What is so spezial about this fabric?

A: I know milled loden since I was a child. Already in kindergarten my mother put my sister and myself always in milled loden jackets. I remember my red milled loden „janker“ very well: it was edged dark blue and had little silver metal buttons. I loved to wear it together with my green kilt. My mother used to combine the traditional material with fashionable parts. Many years later, as a student at the Fashion school ESMOD, I rediscovered this particular natural material again during my internship at an Austrian dress maker in Salzburg. Since then, milled loden has been my favorite fabric. After the birth of my daughter I was sure: Children's fashion from Walk, that`s what I want to make! And I wanted to do it my way: authentic, especially high quality and timeless. My garments should be able to be passed through the family and live long.

Hilda.Henri Collection SS 2014

Q: What is so spezial about this fabric?

A: Walk is a natural wool product without any chemical additives and with temperature regulating and breathable effect. It is ideal for use in children's fashion. Wollwalk from pure new wool or merino wool is soft, lightweight, hardwearing, water resistant and durable. It adapts to fit the body shape of the child. The precious lanolin obtains with the after manufacturing process. In addition, the walking process is a traditional, eco-friendly and environmentally conscious manufacturing, which satisfy my own eco-social aspiration.

Q: What ist the structurre of your collection?

A: The centerpieces of my collections are quality made coats, jackets and capes from Walkloden, for girls and boys. These are complemented with skirts, dresses, pants, and knitwear. I offer my garments in double sizes so that they accompany the children several seasons and may become favourite pieces. Size 2 years (86/92) up to size 16 years (170/176). With each collection there are new accessories such as hats, headbands and scarves. In 2014, selected parts will also be available in women's sizes. Mother & Child in matching outfits!

Q: Where do you get your design inspiration from?

A: For Fall / Winter 2014/15 I was inspired by Russian folklore, the last nomads of the north and of Czech fairy tales and transported my creations into the modern era and into the urban life.

Q: On what can we look forward to in the new fall/winter collection 2014/15?

A: I am particularly proud of my new coats! For the boys I used a very traditional austrian fabric “Kalmuk”, which was formerly very appreciated for its robustness by rafters, coachmen and forest workers. However, I use it on my very own way: I have turned the fabric upside down! The typical “Wachau” pattern adorns now the inner life of the garments.
For the girls, I can make exclusive Jacquard. Special details like puff sleeves and buttons with subtle laser designs give the models an additional touch of couture.

Q: Was steht hinter dem Namen Hilda.Henri?

A: Walk begleitet mich schon seit meiner Kindheit.

The magical world of ígló&indí.

Ígló&Indí is a manifestation of a creative state that children have easy access to, a place where the mind gets to roam free. A state we long to persevere, as we become adults. I truly believe all children are artists. They see colors, shapes and patterns as tools for creation … where there are no limitations - only opportunities.
Ígló&Indí´s head designer, founder and artistic director is Helga Ólafsdóttir.
